Gender Determination Using Maxillary Sinus Index of Batak Ethnic Reviewed by Cephalometric Radiography in Students of University of Norh Sumatera

Gender determination is oenof the important parameters in forensic identification. In the case of natural disasters of criminal case, although teh skull and other bones will be destroyed but it has been reported that the maxillary sinus remain intact. Maxillary sinus is also called the highmore antrum. It is the largest and the paranasal sinus formed from our four paranasal sinuses. The aime of this study was to find out the maxillary sinus index to determine the gender and to know the mean value of maxillary sinus index between male and female students of Batak ethnic reviewed by radiograpy of lateral cephalometric. The samples of this study mean of maxillary sinus index of male is 1.30±0.20 and for female 1.20±0.13. Data was analysed by using independent t test (p<0,005). In conclusion, there were significant difference in the maxillary sinus index between male and female reviewed by lateral cephalometric of students in University of North Sumatera.
