Development of the Institutional Repository (IR) in University of Sumatera Utara (USU) was initiated in 2001, with digitized of lecturer scientific papers and research reports which are still few numbers, and then published on the Web began in February 2002. USU Repository use the simplified application program which utilized the existing module Download of the CMS PostNuke. IR development is aimed : (1) to provide open access to the output of the institution to maximize its used, (2) to create global visibility to the work of institution, (3) to collect content in a single location, and (4) to keep and maintain the digital assets of the institution, including the gray literature or unpublished easily lost. Development of IR in digital form is also motivated by strong growth in the form of printed gray literature produced each year. This case given to the various kinds of problems such as the need for larger storage space, maintenance and handling of more complex, and greater cost. Otherwise, an electronic publication with open access is considered plagiarism and duplication which is reduced and impact of the improving the quality of academic work produced. In 2007, the Library developed the software for handling Repository “DELI” named. In April 2010, Repository migration from DELI into DSpace. DSpace (DuraSpace) is based on open source software that is developed through collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries and Hewlett-Packard (HP) since 2002. USU Repository is built with the principle of open content that can be used or accessed in an open and free, both abstracts and full articles (abstracts and full texts) the condition must be first member in the USU web site Repository. USU Repository is ranked 51 Top Institutional Repository (July 2011) and 17 ranking in Top Institutional Repository (April 2012) in Web of World Repositories ranking organized by the Webometrics.
