Hubungan Karakteristik dan Tindakan Ibu dalam Pemeliharaan Kesehatan Gigi dengan Status Kesehatan Gigi dan Mulut Anak di SD Kecamatan Medan Tuntungan”

Abstract

Dental caries is a disease of the teeth and mouth that can be experienced by everyone and often occurs in children. Based on the annual report of Puskesmas Simalingkar in Medan Tuntungan Subdistrict 2009, the number of patients came to this Puskesmas for oral and dental treatment were in average 24 children every month, 19 (79.2%) of them suffered from dental caries and gingivitis. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between mother’s characteristics (age, education, income) and behavior (action taken to maintain her child’s dental health) and the status of oral and dental health. The design of the research was survey of analytic with cross-sectional design were conducted Januari until December 2011 with a population all of students 6th grade of SD Negeri 068332 and SD Budi Murni 2 in Medan Tuntungan Subdistrict. Samples were selected by means of simple random sampling technique. The mothers of students made as respondents. Data obtained were analyzed through independent t-test and ANOVAs one way The results of this study showed that there were significant relationships between mother’s age, educational level, income and behavior to maintain child’s dental health with her child’s dental health status. In conclusion, there were relationships between mother’s chracteristics and behavior and the status of oral and dental health of their childreen. The management of puskesmas Simalingkar is suggested to be able to implement the UKGS complete program to achieve a better oral and dental health status of the school children. The school is suggested to include the lesson on oral and dental health in the lesson of sport and health. For mother information on dental health maintenance should be promoted through television, radio or newspaper in order to improve knowledge and behavior in maintaining dental health.
