Gambaran Karateristik Penderita Karsinoma Nasofaring Di Rumah Sakit Umum Haji Adam Malik Dari Januari Sampai Desember 2009

Abstract

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor that grows in the nasopharynx with a predilection in Rossenmuller fossa and the roof of the nasopharynx. NPC is a malignant tumor of head and neck regions were mostly in Indonesia.

Methods: The purpose of this study was to see the picture of the characteristics of NPC patients at the General Hospital Haji Adam Malik, Medan from January to December 2009. This research was conducted with descriptive retrospective method with cross sectional approach. Type of sample used is total sampling. Population sample is all the patients with NPC who was treated at General Hospital Haji Adam Malik, Medan from January to December 2009.

Results: There were 113 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma from January 2009 until December 2009 at the General Hospital Haji Adam Malik year with the number of men as many as 83 cases (73.5%), the largest age group suffered from NPC is the age group 40-49 years ( 26.5%), as many as 39,2% cases of patients are the Batak ethnic group, the highest main symptom is the enlargement of lymph nodes (66,4%), the highest stage of disease is stage IV (49,6%) and histopathologic type is a carcinoma without differentiation is 47,8%.

Discussion: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma most common in men and the highest age group is between 40 -49 years. The main symptom most often occured is enlarge of lymph nodes and the highest stage of NPC is stage IV. The conclusion is this may be caused by early symptoms are not typical and inadequate health services to detect early disease. Hospitals, health departments, health care centers and institutions of health-related institutions need to provide for an extension of nasopharyngeal carcinoma early detection and early treatment.
