Quality of live improvement should be support by adequate provision of food including better quality and quantity. Implementing food hygiene and sanitation is aimed to provide healthy and save food for consumers. The food without adequate hygiene and sanitation will give risk to cause diseases or health problems. As basic information to carry out guidance and monitoring for food vendors at Simpang Selayang, it is needed to know the condition of hygiene and sanitation. This study is aimed to describe hygiene and sanitation aspects of snack vendors such as personal hygiene of vendors, the way of washing stuffs, availability of clean water,local waste management and sanitation. The type of study is descriptive survey with cross sectional approach. Data were collected through observation and interview method. Data was analyzed by comparing hygiene and sanitation requirement set up by Peraturan Menteri Kesehatan RI No. 236 tahun 1997. The study was carried out on 1 – 8 August 2003. The results of study showed vendor personal hygiene, the way of washing stuffs, and local waste management did not fulfill to health requirements. All vendors used clean water. This condition could be caused by lack of information and knowledge of hygiene and sanitation and also bad habit of vendors. Inter sectors institutions (Dinas Kesehatan Kota, Puskesmas,and Dinas Pasar) need to carry out health promotion for vendors regarding food hygiene and sanitation to produce good and healthy snacks. Consumers should be selective in buying snacks with considering the nutrition value and food safety.
