    Abstract

One of the causal factors for nasopharyngeal carcinoma is inactivity of p53 tumor supressor gene, that it produces protein p53 mutant. This study aims to know how the expression of protein p53 mutant at nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Study design is a descriptive analytic cross sectional study. The samples are consecutive sampling since March-December 2005 in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of Adam Malik Hospital, Tembakau Deli Hospital and dr Pirngadi Hospital Medan. All of the suspicious nasopharyngeal carcinoma were undergone nasopharyngoscopy biopsy, then we performed Immunostaining to analyze the presence of brown granular in nuclear that signs of expression of protein p53 mutant. The conclutions are the expression of protein p53 mutant in nasopharyngeal carcinoma was 76,5% and the most cases was found in undifferentiated carcinoma type was 50%. No significant correlations between histopatological type, tumor stadium, age and sex with the expression of protein p53 mutant.
