Issue Date: 9-Jul-2010
Abstract: Background: Personality change is a frequent and lasting complaint voiced by caregivers of stroke patients. The aim of this study is to assess relationship between changes in personality after stroke with depression and anxiety in caregivers. Methods: A consecutive series of patients was recruited from outpatients at Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan with stroke. A questionnaire was administered to the caregivers at least three months after stroke to determine their perception of patient’s pre-stroke and post-stroke personality. Personality changes was identified by changes in ratings, and associations between personality changes and the following variables were explored: emotional disorders in caregiver and patients (measured using the hospital anxiety and depression scale), stroke classification (Oxford community stroke classification) and residual disability (Barthel index and Nottingham extended activities of daily living scale). Results: Caregivers of 35 stroke patients were examined. Almost all of the character of personality after stroke changed significantly (p<0.05, t-test of difference) except: worthless and tidy appearance. There were significant correlations between personality change and both depression and anxiety in caregiver and patient (p<0.05), residual disability (p<0.05) and stroke classification (p<0.001). Conclusion: Caregivers commonly perceived personality change in stroke patients. This is associated with emotional distress in caregiver, residual disability and stroke classification.
