dc.description.abstractThe role of mother tongue is not only social but also psychological, either in its daily use or in foreign language learning. This article is the development and further analysis of a part of the writer’s research results conducted in 2007 and in 1999. The main topic of this article focuses on sociolinguistic and psychological roles of mother tongue in the classroom teaching-learning process of foreign language, in this case English. Sociolinguistic roles in this article are limited to the code-switching processes and psychological ones are limited to the aspect of adult learning-motivation. Research results showed that the mother tongue was one address of having code-switching and it had important role in foreign language learning. Although the English class should be formally full of the use of the learned language, switching process to mother tongue took place naturally and the use of mother tongue had psychological roles in order to improve learning motivation for adults.en_US
