dc.description.abstractLama setiap tahap pertumbuhan ranggah dalam satu siklus ranggah menjadi sangat penting diketahui mengingat puncak aktivitas reproduksi rusa timor (Cervus timorensis) jantan tidak terjadi pada setiap tahap pertumbuhan ranggah. Ranggah yang bersiklus bersifat temporer dan akan lepas setiap tahunnya (annual antler cycle). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui lama setiap tahap pertumbuhan ranggah dalam satu siklus ranggah sehingga dapat ditentukan lama masa aktif reproduksi rusa timor jantan. Metode penelitian dengan pengamatan lama setiap tahap pertumbuhan ranggah (velvet, keras, dan tanpa ranggah) dalam satu siklus ranggah secara alamiah dan morfometri ranggah dilakukan interval tiga minggu. Penelitian ini berlangsung selama 18 bulan (Juni 2002 sampai Desember 2003) pada empat ekor rusa jantan (kisaran umur 4 – 6 tahun). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya variasi individu pada lama setiap tahap pertumbuhan ranggah. Rataan setiap tahap pertumbuhan ranggah masing-masing: ranggah velvet 155.75 ± 7.13 hari, ranggah keras 207.25 ± 2.75 hari dan tanpa ranggah selama 16.25 ± 0.88 hari. Rataan lama siklus ranggah 379.25 ± 8.88 hari. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa periode terlama dari tahap pertumbuhan ranggah dalam satu siklus berada pada tahap ranggah keras, di mana pada periode ini rusa jantan berada pada masa aktif reproduksi antara bulan Juni sampai Februari.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe length of every antler developmental stage is very important to be studied because the peak of reproductive activities of timor stags (Cervus timorensis) do not occur at every stage of the antler developmental cycle. The cycling antler is a temporary phenomenon which is casted annualy (annual antler cycle). Timor stags have antler development stages as follows: pedicle (the spot where a new set of antler develops), velvet (young soft hairy coated antler) and hard antler. This research was aimed to study the length of each antler developmental stage in the antler cycle which can be used to determine the active reproductive period of the stag. The research was conducted by analyzing each natural antler developmental stage, i.e the velvet, hard antler and casting stage periods. This research was conducted for 18 months (started from June 2002 until December 2003) on four adult stags (4 to 6 years), morphometry were measured at three weeks intervals. Results of this research showed that those stags had individual variation on each antler developmental stage. The mean length of velvet, hard antler and casting periods were 155.75 ± 7.13 days, 207.25 ± 2.75 days and 16.25 ± 0.88 days respectively. Mean length of the full antler cycle was 379.25 ± 8.88 days. It is concluded that the hard antler development is the longest stage of the antler cycle in which the stag has optimum reproductive activities, started from June to February.en_US
