Both of the approaches remain  in use effectively.  However the retrieval technique by using combination of natural language and controlled vocabulary is ideal to be &#xD;
used in text-based information retrieval system. Searching  by using natural language and controlled vocabulary, in fact, are complementary. Efficiency and effectiveness of text-based information retrieval system can be measured from recall and precision.</description>

Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the correlation between the librarians’ pro-social intention and user satisfaction of Badan Perpustakaan dan Arsip Daerah (BAPERASDA) North Sumatera Provine, located at Jl. Brigjen Katamso No. 45K Medan. The population of this research is&#xD;
the entire user that registered as member of BAPERASDA North Sumatera Provine until April 2008, namely 2.950. The samples taken are 352 people from all of this population by using Slovin formula. Data of this research are collected through quesionaires, observation, interviews and documentation&#xD;
studies. The data analysis that used the descriptive analysis is supported by the survey method, the hypothesis is tested by using correlation technic of product moment from Pearson with 95% convidence interval (α = 5%). The research result show that there are positive relation and significant between pro-social intention and user satisfaction of Badan Perpustakaan dan Arsip&#xD;
Daerah (BAPERASDA) North Sumatera Provine, with correlation value is 0,95. The determination coefficient is 0,90. This case to show that pro-social intention and user satisfaction of Badan Perpustakaan dan Arsip Daerah (BAPERASDA) North Sumatera Provine 90%, where 10% can not be explained in this research.</description>

user education towards the using of Panca Budi’s Library by its students. The samples taken are 150 &#xD;
students from part of departements, they are: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economic, Faculty of &#xD;
Agriculture, Faculty of Technical, and Faculty of Islamic that  consist of registered university &#xD;
members as the members of the library user. Data of this research are collected through &#xD;
questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. Hypothesis is tested by using multiple &#xD;
linear regression with 95% level of confidence (α=0.05). This research shows that 81.3% of students &#xD;
satisfaction in learning user education.</description>

Abstract: The point of issue from this research is “Comment Contributions from Figures on Blurb in Addition To Attracts Readers on Gramedia Book Store in Padang”. The purpose of this research is to find out the fascination of writing, the credibility of the figures, also the content and message from the comment figures. The research method is analysis descriptive survey method, with collecting data method through observation, literature study, interview, and enquette spreading to 67 responders. Result from the research shows that comments gave by figures about the book on blurb as a media on promoting book also representing to the reader about book and as a reference for reader about the book which going to be choosen as a reading materials. The coalescence of comments from figures on blurb have to noticing on some aspects which are, presentation form, the figure who give the comments, and the comments relation with the content of the book. Conclusion from the research is that color, alphabet’s type, alphabet’s size, language that used in comments, way to forwarding the comments, figures who give the comment, also content of the comment has contribution for readers in choosing reading materials. Suggestion from this research would be the coalescence of the figure’s comment using clear language, communicative also easy to be understand and has catching appearance. Beside that also need to be noticed the society belief of figure who gave comment and the comment better be put the book’s flaw had on it.</description>

Abstract: The presence of intermediary, such as information professional, or information broker able of providing service to search scientific information through exploration from several database is needed progressively. The role of intermediary in information searching is felt to be more important, because information need by people increases over time, even day to day. The information retrieval in database requires some strategy and techniques of exploration. Both strategy and technique of searching will include the activity of identifying information need, building query and formulating, selecting the appropriate database, and evaluating. Making reference to such strategy, experiment on information retrieval system conducted to one real user of information seeker get the optimal result. This is evident in which the document taken based on eight queries gets the highest precision i.e., 0.68, with averagely 68.37%. It means, 68.37% of document gained by the subject will be relevant to subject needed by information seeker. Such precision figure can be used as indicator to state the database used in this research, i.e., Science ProQuest Agriculture Journals which USU Library is subscribing in addition to relevant database used by agricultural researcher that will be also relevant to be used by researchers in technological field of fishery result.</description>

      <title>Pola Pemanfaatan Internet oleh Mahasiswa Program Magister Ilmu Hukum Program Pascasarjana Universitas Sumatera Utara</title>

Abstract: The objective of this research is to know the pattern of the utilization of the internet by the students of Law Magister of USU and to know wether the internet is useful to support their study. The respondents are 50 students of Law Magister of USU academic Year 2004/2005. Most of respondent (52%) knew the internet after they became a college student at USU. In the matter of the motivation in using internet, around 54% respondent stated using the internet because of the demand of their study. Most respondent (54%) used the Internet shop in accessing the internet. The frequency of using the internet, most of respondent (60%) used 1 to 7 times in a month. 70% respondent spent time 3 to 4 hours when they use the internet. The use of internet facilities like WWW, e-mail, mailing list etc, more respondent (90%) was dominated by the use against WWW. Generally (98%) respondents used search engine Yahoo to receive the information. Almost half of the respondent looked for the article that was gotten to e-journal. Considered from the use of the point of the investigation access generally (80%) respondents accessed was based on the title, and 76% respondents replied the internet was influential towards the success of their study.</description>

      <title>Analisis Sitiran terhadap Disertasi Program Doktor (S-3) Ilmu Kedokteran Sekolah Pascasarjana Universitas Sumatera Utara</title>

Abstract: The problem of this research is document characteristic that cited by students of Doctoral Program in Medical Science, Postgraduate Schools of USU in writing dissertation. The objectives of research are to know: (a) the rank of authors that cited; (b) the most common magazine and scientific journal that cited; (c) the obsolescence of documents that cited; and (d) the form or types of library materials that cited by students of Doctoral Program in Medical Science, Postgraduate Schools of USU. The approach that used in this review is bibliometric approach. The population in this research is all dissertations of students of Doctoral Program in Medical Science Postgraduate Schools of USU, which are available at the USU Library. All dissertations are made as sample of research. The total of document cited in all dissertations is 816 documents with average of citation are 117 per dissertation. The average citation by author on personal name is 114. Majority of document cited in all dissertations use current information source, i.e. scientific journal 63,5% of total document cited. The most common big five rank of scientific journal cited including: Journal of Cancer, Contact Dermatitis, Thromb Haemost, Trans Roy Soc Trop Med Hyg and Ann Thorac Surge. The oldest age of document in term publication which is cited is 1894, and the new one is 2003. The length of obsolescence or half-life of document cited is 20 years. About 58,4% of document cited in all dissertations is under 20 years of age or under age point of document obsolescence.</description>

Abstract: The image of librarians in the world today has not changed much since many years ago. Entering the library, people expect to find an old – fashioned librarian usually woman with hair in tight bun, wearing glasses, and sensible shoes. She also loves silence, likes books and says “shh“ a lot. Although librarian deals with computer everyday, the people think that she still looks like the mid-century stereotype. The question is “what happened to the librarian? In a working situation where employees are in continuous contact with the client, such as librarian in the library, the ability to interact and communicate well is essential to the outcome of so much of the work they do. The important thing is it also build the image of the employees /librarians. In other words the image of the librarians, whether it is positive or negative, is really depends on how librarians satisfy the user’s needs through library services. Library users do not only search products or services, they also search the many intangible things such as friendliness, goodwill, a caring attitude, and a whole range of other behaviors and emotions which go to create the package called “interpersonal skill”.</description>

Abstract: The objective of this research is, to know (a) the pattern of Internet utilization practiced by students at the USU Library, (b) the extent to which the Internet is useful to meet the study need of students, (c) the purpose of Internet utilization by students, and (d) the evaluation of students on the Internet service. Based on a survey conducted against 200 people, descriptively the general description has been gained that majority of respondent (50,50%) just start to use the Internet in the library, while 49,50% have ever used the Internet before being a college student at USU. Majority of respondent 60,50% said, that they most often use The Internet in Internet shop, and then in libraries (37%). The most common used facility is WWW (93,50%). About 77% of respondent said that they most often utilized the facility of e-mail. The main purposes of the respondents assume to use the Internet is to search for scientific information (63%). In addition, they also use the Internet as communication device (e-mail and chatting) and also as a device for gaining the news from a wide range of newspaper, magazines, and so on in online of nature. Majority of respondent (59%) said that the Internet is useful to use in supporting the study requirements. The evaluation of respondent against Internet is good and excellent (96,50%). By 54,50% of respondent said that the cost of Internet use at the library is very cheap.</description>

      <title>Kebutuhan Pustakawan Profesional di Propinsi Sumatera Utara</title>

Abstract: This research was carried out to know the requirement for the professional librarians in the North Sumatra Province. Through this research, was gotten the picture about the librarian’s situation qualitatively and quantitatively all over the available library in the North Sumatra. Results of data processing showed that is gotten by the difference that very significant between the number and the ideal qualification the librarian compared with the number and the librarian’s available qualification to the library that became the respondent. Still was needed by 933 librarians for the respondent’s 80 libraries, with the qualification S2 totalling 32 librarians, S1 totalling 150 librarians, and S0 totalling 751 librarians. The situation that is very sad happened in SLTA and SLTP, where almost all the schools did not have librarians. Libraries to these schools generally are managed by the teachers.</description>

      <title>Pengaruh Kualitas Pelayanan Terhadap Kepuasan Mahasiswa Menggunakan Perpustakaan USU</title>

Abstract: Principle in giving priority to satisfaction is the philosophy of a university library. One of many that is taken to consideration is by giving qualified services such as service that can satisfy the needs of the university students and their expectations. The problem of this research is how the influence of service quality (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangibles) for the satisfaction of the university students in using the USU Library. This research aims to know the influence of service quality (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangibles) to the student satisfaction is using the USU Library and to find out the service quality dimension that influences the most in satisfying the students in utilizing the USU Library. The samples taken are 393 peoples from all of this population of 26.208 peoples that consists of registered university students as the members of the library by using Slovin formula. Data of this research are collected through questionaires, interviews, observation and documentation studies. The validity instruments tested by using validity construct test and the realibility instrument tested by using Cronbach Alpha. The data analysis that uses the descriptive analysis is supported by the survey method, the hypothesis is tested by using multiple linear regression with 95% convidence interval (? = 5%). The research results show that the reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangibles dimensions have a positive influence in students satisfaction in 0,563 with a significant level of 95%. This shows that 56,3% of students satisfaction in using USU Library can be influenced by some dimensions such as reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangibles and the remainder of 43,7% are influence by other independent variable that have not been shown and that are not under considerations. The most influenced dimension in satisfying the students in using the USU Library is tangibles direct dimension that is a standardized coefficient of 0,318.</description>
